Young Composer of the Year Award 2011
 
Welcome to the Charities Philharmonia Young Composer Award in association with Dreams Come True and Classic FM.
 
2011 will see the second year of this exciting competition recognising the talent of young, UK based composers, ages 18 - 30 years. Composers are asked for works for Symphony Orchestra written for a young  audience, of between 10 and 20 minutes, with or without narrator.
 
The winning composition will be performed live by Charities Philharmonia at their concert in February 2011.

 
The winner will, in addition, receive a cash prize of £250 and will be presented with the, Young Composer of the Year Award Trophy 2011.
 
The Award Process
 
The composition must be original and for full orchestra and optional narrator. 
 
Compositions will be considered by a series of judges at different stages of the competition rounds.
 
The eight semi-finalists will have their compositions recorded by Charities Philharmonia for judging purposes and given a copy of the orchestral performance.

 
Final Entry Date: All materials for application must be received by 30 November 2010
 
Entry Requirements
 
All applicants must provide the following to ensure their entry is valid:
  1. A completed application form and covering application fee of £25
  2. Applicants must be aged 18 to 30 years old
  3. 2 print copies of the score for full orchestra* (PDF/Sibelius file optional, but recommended)
  4. A recording of the piece, either orchestral or computer generated (optional, but recommended)
  5. The duration of the composition should be between 10-20 minutes in length when performed
  6. The submitted compositionmust be an original piece composed by an applicant. Signed verification that the composition is the applicants own work.
  7. Orchestration must not exceed 2+pic/2+eh/2+bc/2+cbn-4/3/3/1-timp+3-harp-piano-strings
  8. Arrangements and transcriptions are not eligible for entry
  9. The composition must be original for full orchestra and optional narrator
  10. The composition must have not been previously published
  11. The submitted composition must not have previously been performed in public for concert purposes
  12. Guarantee that the performance by Charities Philharmonia must be the World Premiere performance of the composition
  13. Permission granted to make additional copies as needed for the recording / concert performance

  • Only one composition per composer may be submitted
  • The score submitted must be legible
  • The score submitted can be computer produced or hand-written, if legible
  • Scores, DVDs and CDs should bear the title of the piece and the composer's first initial and surname
 
Applicants must submit the following:
  • Completed application form
  • £25 Application Fee (Only Cheque or Postal Order made payable to Dreams Come True Charity)
  • Two copies of the complete score of the composition (no piano reductions)
  • If possible: Sibelius/Finale file of composition + CD of the composition recordings from Sibelius/Finale
  • List of compositions to date
